A student recognizes his previous struggle with spelling during a winter tutoring session. He stated, “I have a sentence in my head and it sounds great, but I can’t spell one of the words. I go back and replace it with word I know how to spell. It kind of dumbs it down.” This is how most people who struggle due to the difficulties caused by dyslexia communicate. Their ability to communicate orally is much more advanced than their ability to communicate in writing.
More recently this same student was able to easily spell longer, more complicated words. He commented, “That was pretty easy!” He was able to confidently spell 15 letter words. Receiving tutoring in the Barton Reading & Spelling System helps spelling rules make much more sense.
