Are Early Reading Interventions REALLY Necessary?

Parent and happy child doing homework.

Presentation for Decoding Dyslexia- Oregon in February 2014

with Cheryl Anthony, M.S. Ed.

Early literacy growth is essential for success in school, but is EARLY reading intervention really needed?

Most parents understand the physical milestones their children should make, but know very little about early milestones for literacy acquisition.

  • What is the expected progression of early literacy skills in young children?
  • How soon do parents need to watch for these skills?
  • How important is oral language development to literacy?
  • What if my child/student is not meeting early benchmarks?  What help should I provide?
  • Is early intervention really necessary?  Won’t my child/student catch up in a year or two?
  • What does reading research tell us about early literacy skills?
  • What can parents, preschool, and early elementary teachers do to help early literacy skills develop?
  • What should I do if all of my efforts to help as a parent/teacher fail?

Who should attend this lecture?
